Spring clean to sell

Tagged:

Spring has arrived and that means so has the prime selling season! If you’re thinking of selling in the coming weeks or months now is the time to do some serious spring cleaning.  Potential buyers will be looking at your indoor and outdoor areas, as well as EVERYTHING in between (and yes – that means inside cupboards and pantry)! Here’s our guide to getting started.

Declutter what you can and can’t see

This includes inside EVERY cupboard. Potential buyers will open wardrobes and pantries to scope out the space available so you need to make the right impression. Take the time to do it properly so you’re ready to go. Allocate yourself a full day or even weekend and tackle one area at a time.  Take everything out, sort and only keep the items that you really love, divide up your empty space into a logical and workable layout, then replace only what you need.  Some empty space leftover is your friend. Buyers will see that as ‘lots of storage’.

Spruce up your soft furnishings

Wash and iron everything – bed linen, cushion covers, whatever you can see. Use the lovely spring weather to air your mattresses, doonas and rugs, and whilst they are hanging in the breeze take time to clean the floors. Not only will your house be fresh and bright for your visiting buyers, you will love how clean it feels to live in as well.

Dust and wipe from floor to ceiling (and everywhere in between)

It’s all in the detail for this one!  Just like judges on “The Block”, buyers will see dust, dirt, spider webs and anything else you know shouldn’t be in a ‘beautiful’ home.  If you have cleared space in your cupboards, wipe down the shelves so they are not dusty.  If you moved a rug, dust, vacuum or mop where it was.  And if you have an internal staircase be sure to polish the banisters, wipe the wooden railings or clear the glass panels of any finger prints.  Start at the top of each room with your ceiling and cornices and work your way down.  You will love the results, as will your buyer.

Hail the great outdoors

Once you have made the inside sparkle… you need to finish the job by ensuring your outdoor areas match the level of care and cleanliness of your inside spaces.  Pressure wash paved areas, clean the “winter-green” pool, mow the lawns and trim overhanging branches you just haven’t bothered to look after over the cooler months.  You’ll be amazed at just how impressive your outdoor areas will look after some grooming attention.
