Whether your family has a new member, or you’ve just outgrown your apartment and want some extra leg room so to speak, upsizing is an exciting time but as with everything real estate, you shouldn’t go full steam ahead until you have done your research. Essentially, upsizing means upgrading your home to something bigger and better. Read on to see our list of tips to help you upsize.
The Basics
Financial planning for your own situation is the best way to approach the process of upsizing, if you can ensure you feel secure for the longer term then the move should be worth it for you (and your family). Bear in mind the added expense of moving to a larger home, not just the initial sale price, but the additional taxes and running costs of the home. Lastly, make sure the upsize is actually worth it, that your potential new home has features that your current one lacks. For example, if you live in an apartment that has no parking, you probably should move to a duplex that only has street parking in a high-traffic area.

How To Tell If You’re Really Ready
Most people probably think they could do with a larger home, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they need to or are ready to upsize.
A pretty clear sign that you need to upsize is that you no longer have a ‘spare’ room or what used to be your media room has turned into yet another bedroom. Of course, family is important, however, it is also important that you have space for your hobbies too, furthermore, living in a cramped house is a quick way for people to get under each other’s skin. Another sign? The kitchen that once served you well when your culinary skills were novice at best can no longer handle your dinner parties or maybe your pantry is overcapacity. This could be a sign that it’s time to invest in more space. A few other factors that hint you’re ready to upsize include you have someone (mum, brother, sister?) moving in with you or maybe your dog is going stir-crazy and needs a backyard to roam in.

How To Prepare
Apart from just needing more space, are you also looking for a change of scenery? Take the opportunity to seek out amenities or lifestyle enhancements that you want to be closer to such as better schools, public transport, or maybe you want to escape to a quieter area. Location is always an important consideration when moving house. Timing when it comes to buying and selling is always tricky to navigate, potentially you may be in the position where you need to sell before you move and if this is the case make sure you have temporary accommodation lined up so you don’t end up homeless! If you would prefer to stay in your current home before you move, ensure you plan the logistics thoroughly and always have a backup plan if things don’t pan out how you’d hoped.
