The challenges of 2020 were significant, and I think it is safe to say the world is forever changed. But when you look you may find that much has changed for the better … For many people, 2020 was a time to re-prioritise what is important in all aspects of life.
Working, remote learning, and even isolation brought its fair share of problems. A notable change we have seen has been the way many of our clients now view their homes. With so many things outside of our control, the home has become a focus for action and improvement, and this continues to be the trend for 2021. ‘Nesting’, creating an environment of comfort, with an atmosphere of safety and respite from the world, is the perfect antidote to the outside world.
From incorporating soothing natural colours and textures to diving headfirst into vintage, here we share an insight into some of the interior trends we can expect to see more of as we move into 2021.
Natural Textures
The natural, earthy tones that have permeated our wardrobes for the last few seasons have also hit our homes when it comes to interior décor. We are looking to instil balance and calm in the living spaces, making it a place where we can switch off from work, technology, and endless notifications. We want to see and feel materials with natural textures like wool, linen, wood, and stone – the opposite of the screens we spend a lot of hours looking at – to add character to the spaces within our homes.
And less is more – simple, decluttered spaces are healthful mentally and physically.

But what about Colour?
Colour palettes too will be inspired by nature. Colours will be used to emphasise warmth and cosiness, with neutral shades and earthy tones such as warm browns and soft terracotta when it comes to interior wall painting
Navy continues to dominate the 2021 Australian interior design world, and this classic and sophisticated colour can be the perfect alternative for homeowners who aren’t that big on the whole neutral colours trend.

Granny Chic
It takes a dash of our grandparents’ decor sprinkled contemporary style, essentially the old with the new … creating something individual. Think upholstered armchairs and lounges with piping, frills, or skirting; floral or brightly patterned wallpaper; dark timber furniture; and tasselled or fringed cushions and linen. It’s not about copying exactly what was in Grandma’s lounge room, down to the lace doily, but simply taking a few key pieces that hold nostalgic value and combining them with more contemporary pieces. The older items tell a story while the newer pieces give contrast to create a unique style.

Multi-functional Spaces
The need for multi-functional spaces and separate areas that allow each family member to have their own space has resulted in leaving the open plan style of living behind. There is a growing trend for spaces that are connected but can also be closed to provide privacy and flexibility. Home offices, playrooms, and dedicated exercise spaces are all popular choices when it comes to making room for activities.
Everyday Luxuries
We feel less inclined to buy clothes and/or makeup because no one can see us when we’re (stuck) at home anyway! So, we’re investing in a few small but luxurious home updates … a scented candle, new bed linen, cushions, or scented hand soap. These small things for the home give us an uplift and brighten up our environment. Rather than spending on a large renovation, they are an inexpensive way to bring about some cheerful changes at home.

Indoor-outdoor Living
For years, Australians have loved the idea of seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces. This trend will only continue to grow in 2021, with a renewed focus on treating the outdoors as an extension of the home. Fire pits, pergolas, pool cabanas, and alfresco dining spaces will be at the top of many home improvement checklists this year.
Indoor trees and plants are also going to continue to trend highly this year. They freshen indoor air, bring the clarity and calm of nature indoors, act like a sculpture on a shelf or tabletop, and caring for them fulfilling.

Buying Local
There seems to be a huge shift in thinking as we look to shop locally to avoid lengthy shipping delays from overseas suppliers.
People are now buying more mindfully, supporting independent shops and small suppliers, especially when it comes to home accessories and artworks.
We’re looking at local makers for special custom pieces such as entertainment units and dining tables.

Like anything else, home decor evolves and there are typically new trends that enter the design space each year. So, above all, decorate with what, and how, you love.
