Prepare your garden for Summer in 3 easy steps

With the warmer months creeping up on us, we’re quickly moving into the ultimate season for entertaining. If you’re lucky enough to have a beautiful backyard oasis or outdoor space, chances are family and friends are already lining up at your door, ready to kick back and enjoy lazy afternoons in the sun.

While maintaining your garden throughout the colder months is the best way to ensure there isn’t a last-minute rush before the first backyard event, many of us likely didn’t make or find the time to brave the cold and get it done. So, we’ve broken down our top garden maintenance tips into three simple steps.

Let’s roll up our sleeves!

1. Tidy & Trim

During winter, our gardens are exposed to all the elements, meaning they can become a graveyard for the damage left behind by strong winds and wild storms. So, when getting the garden ready for Summer, the best place to start is by clearing out garden beds and lawns of broken branches, leaves, and other debris that has built up.

Next up – weeding. A tedious job, however, weeds can rob the soil of water and essential nutrients, so it is crucial to remove them to give the garden a chance to thrive again. Hot tip – make sure when you pull the weeds, you also remove the roots so they don’t grow back!

Once the garden is tidy, and the weeds are gone, trim back any broken or sad-looking branches from trees, hedges, or shrubs which will encourage new growth in the warmer months.

2. Mulch & Mow

It’s time to mulch! Applying mulch to the surface of the soil will promote moisture, maintain temperature and improve fertility. Mulch will also help discourage weed growth. Just make sure to water the garden thoroughly before you lay the mulch.

Now it’s time to tend to the lawns. Mowing the grass is a simple way to transform your garden and make it feel brand new. Plus, an evenly cut lawn gives grass the best chance of remaining healthy and green over Summer.

3. Plant & Pot

Once the garden is tidy, and the soil is on its way to being revitalised, it’s time to breathe life into your garden by adding fresh plants and new pots. Make sure you do some research to find the right plants for your garden – whether that be plants that enjoy shady areas or those that prefer to be drenched in sun all day long. Your local nursery can usually guide you on this.

Once you’ve sourced new greenery, you can get creative with styling your outdoor space. Choose colourful pots in different sizes or create a feature wall using a vertical garden. If you have the space, you could also create your very own veggie patch by choosing some warmer weather favourites such as tomatoes and herbs.

It’s the little things that matter, and these 3 simple tasks will prepare your garden for your best Summer yet!
