Small on space; Big on style

With the right treatment, a small outdoor area can be made to feel more like the great outdoors, becoming a peaceful refuge from the world and a valuable property feature. So, what do you need to create the illusion of something grander in a smaller outdoor space?

Here are our top tips to make whatever size space you have work because it’s not the size that counts; it’s what you do with it!

Small outdoor spaces can be just as enjoyable for entertaining and relaxing as spacious ones. And the plus side to a smaller space is less maintenance and less cost to renovate and decorate … winning!

From vertical garden walls to bright textured colours and swinging hammocks, these ideas will transform any outdoor area into a cosy space with serious style.

Growing up
A vertical garden is excellent for offering backyard privacy, adding a touch of colour and hiding unattractive walls. They’re also a great solution for growing plants that are usually restricted to a vegetable patch.

Table talk
No matter how much space you do or don’t have, ensuring you can squeeze in a table will create an awesome excuse to sit outside, enjoy a cuppa and relax. If you are entertaining, a table will provide space to set up a food buffet and some decorations for atmosphere.

Absolutely fabulous
A standard wooden back fence or wall can be so dull… the solution: paint it!
So easy to do, and the effect is instantaneously fabulous. Darker colours are dramatic and will make your other garden features stand out, while white is clean and adds the illusion of light and space.

Fancy like
Don’t be afraid to have some fun with your furnishings. Paint the bench seat a vibrant yellow, scatter colourful cushions, and decorate your pot plants in whatever colour you fancy. Such a simple way to get some serious wow factor.

From somewhere you’d rather be
Something about swinging in a hammock instantly transports you to a tropical island- total bliss! Add potted palms, festoon lighting, and soft music for those holiday feels anytime. And when you don’t want to swing, the hammock is so easy to store away.

Mix it up
Mix up your flooring and levels to make a small space appear more significant. This concept creates a space illusion and makes the area much more enjoyable.

Mirror mirror
Consider installing a mirror panel to visually double the amount of space you have and increase light levels in darker corners.
Choose a long sheet mirror to keep the look urban and complement it with modern linear fencing.

Double or nothing
Save on much-needed space by adding a comfortable bench seat that can also double as a storage unit for toys, gardening tools, and even the hammock!

Leave a light on
An outdoor space can be immediately transformed by adding the simplest of lighting. String festoon lighting or a sparkle of fairy lights wound around the fences and plants to create a unique (and festive) space.

Fake it till you make it
Laying a faux lawn creates the illusion of a much larger space and is perfect for those who want to be outdoors, even on a covered balcony or decking area. Added bonus- no prickles, no weeding and no need to mow!

Take a seat
Invest in furniture and an outdoor rug to make your space as welcoming and comfortable as possible. Create different zones in your area with furniture items for dining and relaxing and a place to curl up and read your favourite book.
A fire pit is perfect for chilly nights and can be covered in summer to create a coffee table.

With these little tricks, your outdoor area can be enjoyed and celebrated regardless of its size or the season.
