As the chilly months set in, our leafy friends need a little extra care to stay happy and healthy. Whether your plants live indoors or out, here are a few essential tips to help them thrive through the colder season.
Understand Your Plant’s Needs
Every plant is different. Some thrive in cooler conditions, while others are more sensitive to the cold. Take a moment to check what each of your plants needs during winter – a little research now can make a big difference.

Bring Potted Plants Indoors
If your plants are in pots or containers, consider moving them inside for the season. Place them near sunny windows but away from cold drafts. Indoor shelter can protect them from frost and sudden temperature drops.

Adjust Your Watering Routine
Plants grow more slowly in winter and typically need less water. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes during the cooler months, so check soil moisture regularly and only water when the top layer feels dry. Always ensure your pots have good drainage.

Maximise Available Light
With shorter days and weaker sunlight, light-loving plants can struggle. Place them where they’ll get the most natural light and consider rotating them occasionally. If light is scarce, grow lights are a great supplement.

Maintain Humidity
Indoor heating can dry out the air, which isn’t ideal for your plants. Increase humidity by using a humidifier, grouping plants together, or placing them on trays of water and pebbles. You can also mist occasionally – just don’t overdo it.

Protect Outdoor Plants
If your garden plants are staying outside, protect them with a layer of mulch around the base to insulate the roots. Use frost cloths or old blankets, especially on cold nights. Avoid placing plastic directly on plants, as it can trap moisture and cause damage.

Keep an Eye Out for Pests
Even in winter, pests can be an issue, especially when you bring plants indoors. Check regularly for common culprits like aphids, spider mites, or mealybugs. If needed, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Prune and Clean
Winter is a great time to tidy things up. Remove dead or damaged leaves and give your plants a gentle clean to keep their leaves dust-free and photosynthesising. Clearing debris around the base also helps deter pests and diseases.

Stay warm and keep your garden happy this winter!
And remember – if you’re thinking of selling, a healthy garden adds instant appeal to your property.
